Suggestions for books to read?

I am looking for some good books to read. Especially something to take with me to the beach. I am very picky about what books interest me. Here are my favorites. Anything similar to these would be great.
- My favorite books ever are Harry Potter. I love the whole series and have read them all several times.
- I have to admit, I am also a sucker for the Twilight series, but I don’t think I will enjoy other vampire series…you never know though.
- I just finished the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman (Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, and Amber Spyglass) and loved them.
- I have also enjoyed these books…Boy’s Life, Ring, The Westing Game, Five People you Meet in Heaven, and Unquiet Earth.

I am not a big fan of the Narnia series or Lord of the Rings.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Wby do the vampires sparkle in twilight ?

Stephanie meyers completely defines the genre. you don’t find that in lord of the rings or in harry potter

What good books can i read?

I’d like to find a book (or a series of books) that can follow Harry Potter! It’s a huge let down after finishing all the harry potter books because there seems to be nothing else to read! Please dont suggest any vampire books or lord of the rings! Any other suggestions fine (dose not have to be fantasy)

how good are the vampire academy books?

I am 24 years old and I like to read books. I never really had an interest in reading until I saw the first harry potter movie. I read the entire first four books in week during christmas break back in high school and by the time we were reading Goblet of Fire we fighting over who gets read lol. Since then I have read all of the Harry Potter books and Twilight and other books for english class like the freedom writers and nickel and dime. I like to fantasy books like Harry Potter because it gets mind off stuff that is going on in the world like the oil spill and final exams for college. I am currently reading Sookie Stackhouse books and after the host but I have across Vampire academy. I have heard good things about it even people said that it better then twilight. Are vampire academy good books and what should I read next? please no Lord of the Rings because I tried that back in high school and never got off the first chapter. BTW do 24 years old read Vampire Academy?

It didn’t suddenly hit me one day to become a fan of the ‘vampire’ world, though I can say that I’ve had a genuine interest in them. When I was younger, people didn’t really give a hoot for vampires, but now all of a sudden, with Twilight going on a rampage now, anyone and everyone adores or despises vampires!

I wasn’t originally planning on writing a book with Vampires in it, especially now with Twilight out… I’m not sure where to lean though- would it make it easier to get buyers due to the fact that its a vampire book, or would it give the opposite affect?

I’ve never actually read through all of the Twilight series- I considered it at a time, but then when just about everyone I knew, including some of my parents’ friends and siblings, began obsessing over it, along with the reviews on the character, writing, and plot quality… Well I decided to just forget about it! I find it rather unbelievable that it got so popular so fast, along with its development into a movie. I’m not saying its necessarily terrible, but it doesn’t deserve as much credit as it has been given.

Anyhow, this all goes to say that I wonder whether or not its safe to write about the topic- despite many differences it would have, people would say it was because of this ‘twilight frenzy’!
It’s given me mixed feelings about it. It doesn’t help that certian friends of mine have hounded me for the idea, saying ‘vampires are stupid and you don’t need to write about it… Except if it’s some old, ugly vampire that is misunderstood’, along with others giving the ‘I don’t know about that’, due to the fact that they just aren’t too keen on the blood-sucking creatures, along with any other beings that are usually involved. Though I can see this being from their views as Christians, just seeing it as occult, I myself am a strong Christian and don’t find anything wrong with a fun fiction story, as long as it isn’t ‘dirty’. (Such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings).

I don’t have much for an idea yet, though I do want it to have action, adventure, fantasy, romance (due to the fact that I’m a sucker for a good love story), etc. Of course, for the romance I’d want it to be a bit more realistic- all that book ‘romance’ such as seen in Twilight really isn’t ‘true love’ as the fans love to say (lust more likely). Here is just a bit of writing I jotted down.
————————————————–

*things to take note*

-This is in a different universe/reality

-It is set during a time with little technology, such as the fact that they still use horse and buggy, swords and shields, bows and arrows, etc. Though some more advanced technology may be introduced.

—————————————————————

Vampires are finally out to conquer- not each other, but all other races… At least so it seems. For the most part, it isn’t that they are out on the rampage to get this job done, but rather that they are doing what they do to give themselves more convinences.

At this time, they have a ruler called the ‘Overlord’ (perhaps the name of the book). For as long as they could remember, they had a ruler named Adalhard, who was the second to be acknowledged as the leader of the Vampires- Also the one who united them together the most. An answer to whether or not he still exists is questionable, though now there is a new ruler- his son Alastair.

It doesn’t mention either, how long Alastair had been reining, though it seems like the majority of the vampires are agreeable with his rule- whether or not that makes him young or old is still questionable as well. Waring upon different civilizations, they are being seen as a true threat to one of the greatest groups- the humans. These humans however, have different distinct things that set them apart; some of these differences seen as valuble in the eyes of the vampires. One region in particular they had been attacking were known to have one of these ‘valuble’ gifts, though few out of the many people actually contained it at this day and age. When one of these people are found, however, a young woman (starting age is yet to be determined…), the vampire soldiers bring her back to King Alastair, who soon finds interest in her (though not in a romantic fashion). He then makes a deal with her people- he would stop the attacks on their region in return for the girl.
With this deal being set, the girl is then kept at the Vampire court, clueless to what is going to happen to her. *That’s as far as I went for the girl (which isn’t far) though I went farther for Alastair.

Alastair’s mother was human- his father, having a soft side for humans, didn’t give her the virus. Unlike what you may be thinking, this doesn’t make him a 1/2 breed- in fact, the only way for Vampir
Vampires to "reproduce" more Vampires is by giving people the virus by injecting them with their fangs. This being said, the only reason why Alastair is a vampire and a legitamit heir to the throne is due to the fact that his father bit him.

One of the main antagonists of the story is his brother (yet to be named), who is actually much older than him, and has a mother who is also a vampire. Because of this, he is trying to lay claims to the throne. On the other side, Alastair holds a claim, though he is in fact younger by perhaps hundreds or even thousads of years (is quite possible that he is actually in his 20s), he was the only offspring known to have been turned into a vampire by the King himself. That being said, many see Alastair as the legit heir to the throne, if it’s to be judged by his lineage and how he became a vampire. (sorry there- cut me off above! Wish I had a bit more characters to use to write a few more details… but ALAS! I don’t)

Good Books to Read For the Summer?

Ok I am looking for some good books to read for the summer. I am 22 so nothing too kiddish. I have read and loved the harry potter series, eragon series, lord of the rings, and everything by nicholas sparks. I have read twilight, but am not really into the whole vampire thing. Any recomendations are appreciated. Thanks!!!

My favourite authors are Tolkien, Jordan, George r r martin and Goodkind. I like LoTR for its epic characters and adventure settings. Jordan for the same and memorable characters, martin for the great battle scenes and historical stuff. And Goodkind for his romance and bravery in the story.

Give me something that well make me extremely satisfied in the end and makes me cry like LoTR when Frodo FINALLY threw the ring into the volcano. Also, I want thicker books because it feels worth it when i finish them.

***Please don’t tell me HP or Twilight or any other chicky vampire fanfictions. I read Dracula of course and Interview with the vampire.
i extremely dislike stuff like vampire academy.

MY MAIN POINT IS PLEASE GIVE ME SOMETHING LITERAL.

Harry Potter is ok but just a bit dull though. I want something ADVENTUROUS.

Thanks and good luck!!
Don’t tell me Eragon or Shannara because they are rip-off of The Lord of the Rings.

I really like this story online -
http://www.worthyofpublishing.com/book.asp?book_ID=8168

But it’s not an actual book. It’s not even finished.

I’d really like to read an actual book similar to that, with fantasy, adventure, mystery, romance.

Please DO NOT suggest Harry Potter, Eragon, Narnia, or The Lord of the Rings, or anything with vampires, werewolves, fallen angels, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have read the Harry Potter series and The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, are there any other good book series similar to these (not vampires though)

Hello.I’m 16 years old and I have began to start reading again.
I go to my local library and I just wanted to know which
authors,series,and books I should look at :)

I dont enjoy vampire stuff or Harry Potter or Lord of the rings.

I like fiction…please help me out.

Thanks :)

Are these copies, or am I just confused?

At school the other day, my friend and I were discussing the Harry Potter series, and we got to thinking: You know, it’s very similar to The Lord of the Rings. I mean, in LOTR, the main character, Frodo, is basically the hero, yet he has something holding him back: his ring. Also, in Harry Potter, he, Harry, is the main character and hero, yet HE has something holding him back: his scar.
In Harry Potter, Harry has an old, wise man looking over him: Dumbledore. In LOTR, Frodo has an old, wise man looking over him: Gandalf.
In Harry Potter, there is an evil guy: Voldermort. In LOTR, there is an evil guy: Sauron. Also, they both die.
In Harry Potter, Voldermort has followers in black cloaks: Dementors and Death Eaters. In LOTR, Sauron has followers in black cloaks: The Black Riders.
Also, Harry and Frodo always get really annoyed with their friends for no reason.

And then we got to thinking about The Twilight Saga. We were thinking that it is a copy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I mean, human with powers (Buffy with her super strength and what-not, and Bella with that ability to stop vamps’ powers working), vampire and human getting together (Buffy and Angel; Bella and Edward), friends that fancy the girl (Xander and Buffy; Bella and all the other guys), and so on. Also, later on Spike comes into it, and Buffy falls for him (or Jacob in The Twilight Saga).
Either way, that seems the same to me.

What do you think?
To Raven,
‘Winning Formulas’? If it’s so winning, why is Twilight crap?
First of all, as much as I hate Twilight, I know that she has powers. She has a power that stop other vampires’ powers working. She has it when she is human, and she continues to have it when she is changed.
Also, Buffy *does* have super strength. She trains so that her reflexes are better. She finds out about being the slayer when she is fifteen, and she already has super strength, but her watcher helps her understand her powers, and how to use it better.
A couple more: In HP, they have the ORDER of the PHOENIX, and in LOTR, they have the FELLOWSHIP of the Ring.
In HP, they have a giant spider, Aragog, and in LOTR, they have a giant spider, Shelob.

Will Lord of the Rings be the next bible?

In 2,000 years will someone find a copy of Lord of the Rings and make it a new world religion?
And at the same time someone will find a copy of twilight and soon there will be centuries of religious war between vampires and hobbits????

Good thing belief allows us to be certain that the books we found so far are not fiction. *caaaaaaaugh*

Is there anything out there sort of similar to chronicles or narnia, but a more mature version? I really liked this book called, "best served cold" and i also liked lord of the rings which is kind of exactly what I want if there are some good books like that. Thanks!

Looking for good books to read?

I’m looking for some good books/series to read. I try those websites where you type in what books you like and they give you ideas…but they never really produce books i like.

I enjoy both adult and teen books, and i’m not offended by any type of content (ie language, sex, incest)

I tend to lean more towards fantasy books, and i HATE romance books.

Some of my favorite books and one that i have read and enjoyed are:
The Chronicles of Narnia
Anything Star Wars
The Tales of the Otori
The Night Angel Trilogy
Cirque Du Freak
The Mortal Instruments
The Heir Trilogy
The Last Apprentice

I don’t like books such as:
Lord of the Rings
Twilight
Vampire Diaries
The Dune series

I have read the "Main stream" ones like Harry Potter, Twilight, Percy Jackson, and so on, so please don’t suggest those types of books.

Any suggestions on books i may like would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am 13 and I am wondering if there are any books I would be interested in.

I detest vampire love novels like twilight or any of those newer published books all about vampires in an attempt to copy twilight.
So Please give me suggestions!
I also Love The Princess Diaries, and Warriors Series.

I love to read but I’ve run out of books to read and I need some suggestions.
I like fantasy, history based books. I’ve read the Inheritance Cycle(Eragon etc.) Inkheart Series, Lord of the Rings Trilogy,Vampire Academy Series, all of Dan Browns books, The Odyssey, and The Illiad recently. So I’d appreciate any suggestions.

good war/romance books to read?

Any suggestions? I enjoy reading books with battle scenes mix with romance, such as Lord of the Rings and Twilight. Anything with vampires and werewolves is great also, as long as there are fighting scenes.

So my sister is having a heroes and villains themed costume housewarming party. So I need a costume for the event, I’m a 24 year old male with long now dyed black hair(naturally brown though my hair was naturally blonde when I was younger) who’s into the dark and morbid, and heavy metal. I also love Fantasy and Horror stories. And I’m really into computer and video games. And pretty much all my clothing is black. So I’ve come up with a few ideas but I was wondering if anyone could give me any good suggestions.

Here’s a photo of me

So far I’ve thought of

Jack Sparrow(Pirates of the Caribbean)
Aragorn(The Lord of the Rings)
Ringwraith(The Lord of the Rings)
Lestat(The Vampire Chronicles)
Jason Voorhees(Friday the 13th)
Kain(The Legacy of Kain series "Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, Defiance")
Darth Maul(Star Wars Episode 1)
The Crow(The Crow Movie)
Geralt of Rivia(The Witcher)
